AFS began as a volunteer ambulance corps in 1914 during the First World War. After World War II started in the youth exchanges in high school, which today makes the AFS the world's largest non-profit exchange organization with operations in more than 55 countries.
In Sweden, AFS was founded as a nonprofit organization in 1948. AFS is based entirely on voluntary contributions from members, volunteers and board.
Our goal is that the AFS experience will lay the foundation for a lifelong experience of personal development. We also want to create an understanding and a commitment to other people and cultures.
AFS is working for a more peaceful world and active global citizenship through increased understanding between people and cultures. We do this by, for example, arranging short and long exchange program for young people. Linked to each program are several elements of intercultural learning.
